India vs Pakistan Cricket: Head-to-Head Record in Every Format
Across 212 completed men’s internationals, Pakistan leads India in Tests 12-9 and in one-day internationals 73-58. India leads the Twenty20 record and has never lost to Pakistan at a 50-over World Cup. Those two facts sit oddly together and are the reason the rivalry is argued about so much. The tables below give the record by format, by tournament and by recent meeting, with the one figure that published sources genuinely disagree on set out separately.
Head-to-head by format
Figures are for men’s internationals up to 16 August 2026. The last completed match between the two sides was on 15 February 2026.
| Format | Played | India won | Pakistan won | Drawn | Tied or no result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | 59 | 9 | 12 | 38 | 0 |
| ODIs | 136 | 58 | 73 | – | 5 |
| T20Is | 17 | 13 | 3 | – | 1 |
The single T20I tie is the 2007 World Cup group game settled by a bowl-out, explained further down. The Test and ODI columns are the ones people find surprising. Pakistan is ahead in both, and comfortably so in the 50-over game. Almost all of that lead was built before 2000: the two sides have not played a Test against each other since 2007, and the ODI record has barely moved since 2013 because they now meet only at tournaments.
The World Cup record runs the other way
| Competition | Meetings | India won | Pakistan won | Tied or no result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ODI World Cup | 8 | 8 | 0 | 0 |
| T20 World Cup | 9 | 8 | 1 | 1 tie |
| Champions Trophy | 6 | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| Asia Cup (all formats) | 21 | 13 | 6 | 2 no result |
Put the two World Cups together and India has won 16 of 17 meetings. Pakistan’s single World Cup win over India came in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai, by ten wickets – their first at any World Cup after twenty-nine years of trying.
The Champions Trophy is the exception that spoils a tidy story. It is the only ICC event where the record is level, and Pakistan’s 2017 final win in London remains the heaviest defeat India has taken in a global knockout against them.
Why sources disagree on the T20I record
Look up the T20 head-to-head and you will find India 14, Pakistan 3 on some pages and India 13, Pakistan 3 with one tie on others. Both are defensible, and the disagreement traces to a single match.
India and Pakistan met in a group game at the first T20 World Cup, in Durban on 14 September 2007. The match was tied. There were no Super Overs then, so it was settled by a bowl-out, which India won 3-0.
- Score the bowl-out as a win and the record reads India 14, Pakistan 3 from 17.
- Score the match as the tie it was and the record reads India 13, Pakistan 3, one tie, from 17.
This page uses the second version, because the result of the match itself was a tie and the bowl-out decided who progressed rather than who won the game. If you see a T20I figure that is one higher than the one here, that is almost certainly the reason – not a missing fixture.
A second, duller reason for disagreement is staleness. Several widely cited head-to-head pages were last updated before 15 February 2026 and are still one match behind.
They stopped playing each other in 2013
| Milestone | Date | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| First Test | 16-19 October 1952 | Delhi. India won by an innings and 70 runs |
| Last Test series | November-December 2007 | Pakistan’s tour of India. No Test since |
| Last bilateral series of any kind | December 2012 – January 2013 | Pakistan’s limited-overs tour of India |
| Since 2013 | – | ICC and Asian Cricket Council tournaments only |
This is the single most useful thing to understand about the numbers. The head-to-head is not a live series record that updates a few times a year. It is a mostly frozen historical total with two or three tournament matches added to it, and that is why Pakistan’s ODI lead has survived a period in which India has been the stronger side.
Every meeting since 2025
| Date | Match | Venue | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23 February 2025 | Champions Trophy, group | Dubai | India won by 6 wickets |
| 14 September 2025 | Asia Cup, group | Dubai | India won by 7 wickets |
| 21 September 2025 | Asia Cup, Super Four | Dubai | India won by 6 wickets |
| 28 September 2025 | Asia Cup, final | Dubai | India won by 5 wickets |
| 15 February 2026 | T20 World Cup, group | Colombo | India won by 61 runs |
The 2025 Asia Cup final gave India a ninth title in the competition, sealed by Tilak Varma with two balls to spare. In the Super Four match a week earlier, Abhishek Sharma had made 74 from 39 balls.
The February 2026 World Cup meeting in Colombo was the most one-sided of the five. India made 175 for 7, Ishan Kishan top-scoring with 77 from 40 balls, and Pakistan were bowled out for 114 with seven overs unused.
The women’s rivalry, which most head-to-head pages leave out
| Format | Played | India won | Pakistan won |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women’s ODIs | 12 | 12 | 0 |
| Women’s T20Is | 16 | 13 | 3 |
India has never lost a one-day international to Pakistan in the women’s game. The most recent meeting was at the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup in Colombo on 5 October 2025, which India won by 88 runs. These figures are current to that match; if the two sides have met since, the totals above will be one behind.
What this page does and does not claim
Cross-checking. The format and tournament totals were taken from two independent published records and reconciled against each other. Where they differed – the T20I column – the difference is explained above rather than smoothed over. Individual match results were checked against match reports rather than against another summary table.
Currency. Head-to-head totals move only when the two sides meet, which is now roughly two or three times a year. Every figure here is stated as at 16 August 2026. A number that disagrees with this page by exactly one match is probably a page that has not been updated since the February 2026 World Cup game.
Draws and no results. Test draws are counted as draws, not shared. ODI no-results are excluded from both win columns, which is why the ODI row does not add up to wins plus losses.
What is not counted. This page covers full men’s and women’s internationals only. Under-19 matches, A-team fixtures, exhibition games and the various unofficial or invitational matches played in the 1980s and 1990s are excluded, and different sources treat some of those inconsistently.
What this page will not do. It does not rank the two sides, predict fixtures, or attribute results to anything beyond what happened on the field. Claims about political motive, crowd behaviour or broadcast revenue circulate widely around this fixture and are not verifiable from cricket records, so they are not made here.
Frequently asked questions
Who has won more matches, India or Pakistan?
Pakistan, on the overall totals. Pakistan leads the Test record 12-9 and the ODI record 73-58. India leads the T20I record and the World Cup record.
Has Pakistan ever beaten India at a 50-over World Cup?
No. India has won all eight ODI World Cup meetings, from 1992 to 2023.
When did India and Pakistan last play a Test match?
In 2007, during Pakistan’s tour of India. There has been no Test between them since.
Why do India and Pakistan only meet at tournaments?
Bilateral cricket between the two stopped after Pakistan’s limited-overs tour of India in December 2012 and January 2013. Since then they have met only in ICC and Asian Cricket Council competitions.
What was the most recent India vs Pakistan match?
The T20 World Cup group match in Colombo on 15 February 2026, which India won by 61 runs.
Why do different websites give different T20 records?
Because of the tied 2007 World Cup group match settled by a bowl-out. Some records count it as an Indian win, others as a tie. That single match accounts for almost every discrepancy you will find.
